What is X?

If you’re anything like me, then you have rarely ever used Twitter. It was just never a big thing for me, seeing as it was mostly an app for conversation and speaking your thoughts (at least, that’s what I had gathered in my experience). X, formerly known as Twitter, first started in 2006 by Jack Dorsey. His idea initially was to create an SMS (short messaging service) based platform in order for friends to keep tabs on one another in short 140-character status updates. While I haven’t ever used X except for an assignment, I still understand the huge hype that used to be around it, especially when it was still Twitter. When I was in high school I specifically remember that’s how most of my friends would get their updates on their favorite celebrities or just news in general. This was also around the time when Eminem and Machine Gun Kelly (famous rap artists) were having beef with each other, and kept releasing diss tracks back and forth. I was in high school from 2016-2020, but by 2012 Twitter had reached 185 million people using their app. Now, in 2024, there is 335.7 million users who are active on the app monthly.

Twitter was bought by Elon Musk in 2022 for $44 billion, who then changed the app into what is now known as X. And with that, X had lost over half of its top 100 advertisers. Again, I was never on this platform to begin with so it never really affected me, but I still saw outrages on all the other social media platforms. There were countless numbers of people who were furious that Elon Musk had bought the app, but I honestly had no clue that even advertisers and companies were outraged as well. Huge companies like IBM, Apple, and Disney had halted their advertising campaigns. It wasn’t until 2023 that Twitter had completely rebranded to X, even having a new slogan: “Blaze your glory!” I’ve been so cut off from Twitter, I’m not sure what their old slogan was or if they even had one. But I do know that the new slogan definitely does not fit the bill. Do other social media apps have slogans as well?
