It’s The Simple Things

Have you ever really sat down and thought about what you wanted to do with your life once you graduate? And I don’t mean career wise, no matter what that will always be an aspect of your life whether you like it or not. I’m talking about your own personal aspirations. Do you want a family? Maybe a specific dog breed or cat breed you’ve always wanted? Or maybe you want your own little homestead with cows, chickens, pigs, etc.! I’m not sure what got me to really write this stuff down, but I’ve been thinking about this thing quite a lot. Being a business in healthcare (pharm biz) major, I can go into just about any kind of job in the business or healthcare administration field. That is so many options, I would have a job pretty much always. So it always leads me to think, what will I do in my free time?

For some background, I used to spend my entire summer with my grandmother (I call her Nana) at her house in North Carolina. She always had multiple gorgeous flower beds spread out throughout the front yard, rose bushes that lined the front of the house, a koi fish pond in the backyard, and a large vegetable garden that was lined with peach trees, plum trees, and different varieties of fruits. It was my favorite thing to go out in the mornings and water the flowers, the garden, and check out our blueberry bush to see if any of them were ripe enough to pick! I can’t tell you how many times we have had blueberry pancakes, muffins, smoothies, or cobbler. There was one time she even made blueberry syrup for our pancakes! Can you tell what my favorite fruit was and still is? I do love blueberries but we ate so many because mostly it was the blueberry bush just made an absolute abundance of blueberries. Our peach and plum trees were typically ransacked by squirrels and deer before we could get to it, and there were never enough strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries to make anything with.

Those are some of my favorite memories as a child, and I think I would love to have my own blueberry bush whenever I get my own house. The ultimate goal would be to try to have all of the things that my Nana used to have around the front and back yards of her house. I don’t have that great of a green thumb so I may not be able to recreate my Nana’s magical gardening powers, but I sure will try. I think I would love for my garden to be mostly fruits, since I love to bake various different goodies and, fresh fruit would be perfect. It would be nice to be able to recreate those fond memories with my own children as well. But, it is just a dream. I have no idea what the future holds, but I sure so hope I’m able to make this a reality. I want that child-like wonder again, running outside with bare feet, smelling the flowers, feeling the sun heat up my hair, and eating a blueberry right off the bush. They are simple and small things, but they are things that I miss very much.

  1. This is so sweet! I love how your Nana's green thumb influenced you, even something as just what your favorite fruit is! I agree that while figuring out your future career is an important thing, the little things, such as planting your own garden and baking goods with the things you grow, is such a wholesome and realistic goal to have. While having a future career in mind is motivating, I think the things that make up our everyday tasks should also be very important, as these keep us happy, energetic and, hopeful for what is to come. For me, I hope to live in a large city, fostering animals and, hopefully with the means to travel, domestically and internationally, in my free time. These things keep us getting out of bed and looking forward to our day!

  2. I loved reading this! Your memories with your Nana sound sweet, and I can totally see why you’d want to recreate that for yourself down the road. I feel the same way about wanting to hold on to those simple, meaningful moments that bring so much joy. Good luck making your dream garden!
